Two golden minutes for a comeback

Two golden minutes for a comeback

Third time in the history of Athletic Club that the team turns around an adverse score in two magic minutes

Athletic was almost an hour behind in the Lezama during the derby against Real Sociedad. Villacampa’s team jumped strongly into the field where they enjoyed a couple of good chances but the goal did not come while the goal of the rival did. During more than half of the match they could not score goals but, when they arrived in the 66th minute, it was double and in less than two minutes the red-and-white team turned the scoreboard over; something that only happened in two other occasions.

The goals scored by Azkona and Lucia Garcia came in just two magic minutes. They compensated the goal of the Mexican player of the Real Sociedad, Palacios, and made Lezama raise. It is what comebacks have, a celebration that becomes greater if goals are scored in such a short period of time.

Athletic had done it previously in other two occasions. On 17 December 2017, Albacete took an early lead in the match (9th minute) but Erika and Maite Oroz scored in just two minutes (15 and 17) to turn around a score that would later end with another goal by Erika. The third comeback with these characteristics was in Bilbao against Atletico Madrid. By the 7th minute of the match they had already scored three goals, the players from Madrid went ahead (min. 1) but the ‘whirlwind’ of Erika Vazquez arrived with two goals in two minutes (min. 5 and 7). In addition, the team ended up the clash with a ‘hat trick’ by the striker from Bilbao.

In addition to these three matches, the difference between the goals of the tied the score changed in the last three minutes and saw the comeback of Athletic in four occasions. In May 2009 against Barcelona – from a 3-2 draw to a 3-4 final result -, against Betis in 2017, in 2012 against Rayo Vallecano, against Las Palmas in 2008 and against the German School in 2008.
