When the injury time means a win

When the injury time means a win

We review the Athletic Club’s ‘in extremis’ goals in the league that resulted in a victory for the red-and-white players

Today is the fifth anniversary of Athletic Club’s last victory in Lezama against FC Barcelona. It was Erika Vazquez who broke the 0-0 draw in a very tight match until the 94th minute. Neither Nekane nor Yulema could do it; it was the captain who picked up the double rejection, kicked the ball into the goal and caused the crowd to shout.

It was also the midfielder from Navarra who scored the three points with a masterful direct shot at the Ciudad Deportiva Luis del Sol (Sevilla ) a year later (2016-2017). The match against Real Betis looked like it was going to end in a 1-1 draw, but Erika solved the match once more. The Betis team was punished again that same season and saw how Nekane, in Lezama, broke the draw in the 91st minute of a match which ended in 3-2. Leia Zarate, also during the 2016-2017 season, was the “smartest of the class” in two occasions and she did not let the victory at home against Rayo Vallecano or Levante escape (both matches were won 3-2). The striker from Lezama scored both goals in the 93rd minute. In the season 2016-2017 Nekane scored in the 92nd in Badajoz against Santa Teresa finishing the match 2-1.

More recently, Ane Azkona rounded off a crazy game against EDF Logroño last season. Just when it looked like it was going to end in a 3-3 victory, the player from Navarra, who was very successful in scoring, closed the 4-3 in Lezama. The clock was at the 94th minute.

The background

The first lioness to score for a win in the injury time was Iraia Iturregi who in 2005 and in Lasesarre determined the match with a goal against Oviedo Moderno. Itziar would achieve it in 2006-2007 by scoring a goal against Lagunak in Barañain when the regular time had just finished. Years later Vanesa Gimbert would also achieve it by scoring a penalty in the 93rd minute against Levante La Plana in 2013-2014.
