Lionesses defeated by Espanyol

The lionesses dominated possession but fall to a 2-1 defeat in Barcelona

Athletic Club Women fell to a 2-1 defeat in their Wednesday night Primera Iberdrola match against RCD Espanyol. Despite taking the lead courtesy of a Yulema Corres goal, the lionesses slipped to a third consecutive loss after Anair and Nicart strikes saw Espanyol pick up the three points.

Athletic got off to a flying start, Yulema tucking away Eunate’s cross in the 2nd minute. The goal gave the lionesses a boost and they controlled the game for large spells in the first half. Meanwhile, the home team gradually started to threaten, especially from set-pieces and long balls.

In fact, it was a long pass from A set-piece in behind the defence that led to Anair’s equaliser in the 34th minute. The equaliser acted as a catalyst for the Catalans who finished off the first half on a high.

Athletic came out for the second half full of belief. Nekane, on the left flank with Eunate, looked to trouble the opposition defence. Villamcampa brought on Erika, Lucía García and Valdezate as they chased a winner. Much like in the first half, the lionesses dominated possession but Espanyol kept the Athletic attack under wraps.

It was yet another set-piece that downed the lionesses. Nicart picking up the winning goal for the home side in the 68th minute. Naroa Uriarte struck from range in search of an equaliser, but Espanyol keeper Dossey kept her net well guarded.

Athletic ended the game in Espanyol’s half but couldn’t find an equaliser. There’s no time to feel sorry for themselves, the lionesses face Primera Iberdrola leaders UDG Tenerife at Lezama this Sunday morning (11:00), the perfect opportunity to end this bad run of results.
