Confidence-boosting win for Athletic Club Women

Athletic Club beat Valencia 2-0 with a strong performance at Lezama

The Lionesses recorded a 2-0 win over Valencia CF at Lezama on Saturday morning, with Yulema Corres and Irene Oguiza scoring first-half goals.

Iraia Iturregi’s side put in one of their best performances of the season so far and have now climbed above Valencia in the Primera Iberdrola league table, moving into ninth place.

Forward Yulema Corres gave Athletic the lead in the 15th minute. She took advantage of a defensive mistake by the visitors and smashed in a left-footed effort from the edge of the area.

Tactically, the Lionesses looked strong and Valencia barely had possession in Athletic’s half. The second goal of the morning came just before the half-time whistle. Irene Oguiza outmuscled her marker to get a head to Eunate’s well-taken free-kick from the right flank.

In the second half, the Lionesses kept their foot firmly on the accelerator and sought to put the clash beyond doubt. Corres went close to grabbing a second and Lucía García had a go after cutting in from the left wing.

Around the 70th minute, Ainhoa Moraza and Leyre Monente could have got the third, but both shot wide.

Iturregi said the match would require attitude and effort for the entire 90 minutes, and her players took heed of the advice. It was a great performance and great result for the Lionesses.

They move above Valencia in the table and have the advantage in the two sides’ head-to-head if in case it comes to that at the end of the season.
