Dominant win for Athletic Club Women against SD Eibar

The Lionesses put SD Eibar to the sword in a 2-5 victory

Athletic Club Women romped to a 2-5 victory over SD Eibar on Saturday morning. Vanesa Gimbert, Maria Díaz, Yulema Corres and Irene Oguiza (x2) were on the scoresheet for the Lionesses in the Primera Iberdrola fixture.

It didn’t take long for Athletic to get off the mark, with Gimbert finding the back of the net in the 6th minute. After opening the scoring, the Rojiblancas settled into the match well and began to play in their opponents’ half. María Díaz doubled the Lionesses’ lead in the 13th minute, getting on the end of an Ane Azkona pass from the right flank.

A little over ten minutes later, Irene Oguiza scored Athletic’s third from a corner and then repeated the feat in the 31st minute. Athletic were 0-4 up at half-time.

Eibar came out fighting for their pride after the break. Nonetheless, Athletic showed no mercy. And Yulema Corres drilled in Athletic’s fifth in the 55th minute.

Erika Vázquez made history when she came on in the 62nd minute, it was her 400th appearance in the red-and-white stripes placing her at third in Athletic Club Women’s all-time list.

Not long later, Eibar dragged one back when Jujuba scored from a set-piece.  In the 73rd minute, Sierra conceded a penalty which Eibar’s Kuki converted to make it 2-5.

Three important points and a major confidence boost for the Lionesses, who face EDF Logroño at Lezama next week.
