A Silver for San Mamés

A Silver for San Mamés

Miriam Martínez, Paralympic silver medallist in Tokyo, tells us her story of overcoming obstacles and her love for The Cathedral

On September 1 2021, Miriam Martínez won the silver medal in the shot put at the Tokyo Paralympic Games. Afterwards, she dedicated her triumph to Athletic and San Mamés. Three years ago the athlete suffered a stroke while working in Bilbao, and as fate would have it, her recovery took place at the IMQ Clinic in Zorrozaurre – in a room with a view of San Mamés.

Miriam, born in Alicante, had to fight for her life with all her strength and it was at that moment, as she says, when the lights would change her life appeared – the lights of San Mamés. Since then she has felt connected to Athletic, to its philosophy and to The Cathedral.

The Alicante native then set off down a new path, one which led her to a place in sport. The day Miriam won the Olympic silver medal, she felt she owed something to San Mamés, and that in this way she had paid it back.
