The Lionesses share the goals

The Lionesses forwards are stepping up and their goals have been crucial in Athletic’s good start to the season

Athletic Club Women’s start to the season has been very exciting. After taking 16 points from a possible 21, the Lionesses find themselves in third place in the Primera Iberdrola, and thus in a qualification spot for the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Added to the all-round performances, the Lionesses have shown much prowess in attack. More importantly, the goals are coming from across the forward line with several players having opened their accounts this season.

The 11 goals scored so far this season have come from five different Lionesses. Erika Vázquez was the latest to join this season’s list of goalscorers with her strike in Sunday’s win over Villarreal CF.

What’s more, Erika’s goal meant she has now found the back of the net at least once in every single one of her 17 seasons at Athletic Club. A remarkable feat for an extraordinary player who continues to make history.

Furthermore, along with the veteran striker, three more strikers have added goals to their tally this season. Ainize ‘Peke’ Barea, Ane Azkona and Yulema Corres have struck three occasions, all goals that were ultimately converted into points for the team.

Centre-back and captain Garazi Murua was the first Lionesses to get off the mark this season, her 57th minute header helping Athletic to a 0-2 win against Madrid CFF in their Primera Iberdrola Matchday 1 fixture.
