Athletic Club Women see out season with a loss

The Lionesses lost 1-4 to Sevilla FC in Erika’s and Gimbert’s last professional appearance

The Lionesses closed out the season with an emotional match against Sevilla FC at Lezama. It was the Sevillistas who took the three points on a scorching hot final day, while Erika Vázquez and Vanesa Gimbert formally hung up their boots. Erika scored on her last appearance, but mistakes meant the Andalusian side were able to secure an emphatic victory.

The first half started off slow but had a crazy end. Sevilla’s Eli Del Estal had the first chance of the match, but Andrea De la Nava saved. Athletic’s Lucía García went one-on-one against Sullastres but couldn’t find the target. Sevilla FC went ahead when Del Estal took advantage of Déborah García’s through ball in the 41st minute.

Erika finished her career doing what she does best: scoring goals. The striker beat the Andalusian goalkeeper to score her 264th goal as a Lioness. However, Sevilla responded quickly, retaking the lead via Inma Gabbaro just before the whistle.

Athletic striker Peke struck over the bar after the restart. Del Estal made it 1-3 in the 50th minute as Sevilla started to widen the gap.

In the 67th minute, Monente came on to replace Erika Vázquez, and the legendary forward received a standing ovation from the crowd. In the 74th minute it was Vanesa Gimbert’s turn, with the Lezama stands once again rising to their feet.

Ane Azkona had a chance to reduce the deficit in the closing stages, but the young striker’s effort went just wide. Moments later Sevilla FC scored their fourth through Vasconcelos.

The final whistle ushered in farewell tributes for Sophie Istillart, Vanesa Gimbert and Erika Vázquez. It was a goodbye that will always be remembered. The 2021-2022 campaign ended with heartfelt tears and with the Athleticzales at Lezama showing their love for the Lionesses.
