Lionesses fight back in Huelva to end winless run

Athletic pull off a remarkable comeback win against Sporting Huleva thanks to goals from Pinedo, Arana and Yulema

Three golden points for Athletic Club Women, who fought back from a two-goal deficit in Huelva to put an end to their recent losing streak.

It comes at just the right time with Iraia Iturregi's Lionesses facing CA Osasuna in the Copa quarter-finals on Thursday.

It was Athletic Club's first visit to Aljaraque, on the outskirts of Huelva, and Las Rojiblancas got off to the worst possible start. In the second minute, Edgren put Huelva ahead in one of the home side's first attacks of the match.

Barely five minutes later, and with Athletic in disarray, De Eira made it 2-0. The Lionesses had no choice but to start fighting back as soon as they could.

Iturregi's side started to find their feet, Peke having their first chance at goal. Clara Pinedo then pulled one back in the 25th minute with an extraordinary volley and the Lionesses were back in the game.

Paula Arana equalised just before half-time, taking advantage of a Yulema Corres cross to beat Mersnik.

Athletic came out determined in the second half and began to harass the Andalusian defence. Another shot from Peke, a header from Valdezate, and the goal that would eventually be the winner.

Yulema put Athletic ahead with a ferocious effort in the 57th minute. The Lionesses now set about defending their lead, and they did so brilliantly.

Las Rojiblancas even had a chance to extend their lead when a Yulema header smacked the crossbar.

A major confidence boost for Athletic, who will now look ahead to Thursday's clash against CA Osasuna (18:30 CET).
