Downpour at San Mamés with a comeback

An astonishing goal from Capa on 87 minutes knocks down Levante in a great match for the red-and-white side

Football done justice. The best Athletic of the season could not get a negative result against a Levante that had been weakened and who found their precious goal in the last play of the first half. Iker Muniain scored the first goal for the Red and Whites with a header through the far post, and Capa the second with a crossed shot after a corner-kick, forging a well-deserved comeback with three minutes to go.

Over 33,000 daring spectators defied the rain and the cold at San Mamés. They truly deserved the victory for their bravery, especially those who stayed until the final whistle. After the wave of chances and the great offensive performance against Levante, one can expect to get more of the same in the match with Granada. If the fixture between Getafe and Osasuna ends up in a draw, Athletic will sit in a European position at the end of the day.

It seemed impossible to beat ex red-and-white player Aitor Fernández, who in the first half had to intervene again and again. Muniain, Unai López, Raúl García and Yuri were some of the players who tried to get past him, but to no avail. As it usually happens in football, if you forgive too much, you end up paying for it. The unfortunate goal against came during Levante’s last play of the first half, when Simón was nutmegged by Postigo.

It did not matter because Athletic, excelling at verticality, being patient with one-touch passes and having a sensational defensive performance, kept on digging. After Simon stopped Levante’s second and last attack, shot by Campaña, the hosts’ occasions started to come one after another. Iñigo Martínez gave it a try with a header, but the equalizer arrived when a cross from Capa, who was rewarded for his effort after running towards the corner flag to get a long pass from Yeray, was netted by Muniain (you do not need to be the tallest to head a ball, you have to be the cleverest).

San José, also with a header, was close to getting the 2-1 victory. However, we had to wait until Capa, who celebrated his debut goal as a lion, scored later. Rain and comeback, this is San Mamés. The fort is back.
