Athletic Club bring all three points back to Bilbao after an emphatic 0-4 victory against Cádiz CF at the Ramón de Carranza.

The Lions came out all guns blazing in Cádiz and performed superbly both with and without the ball. Alex Berenguer, with a brace, Unai López, from a free-kick, and Iñaki Williams, on a counter-attack, tore the home side apart. Next up, Athletic face Villarreal as the Lions start to look up the LaLiga Santander table.

Even the strong wind in Cádiz wasn’t enough to unsettle Athletic, as Marcelino’s boys set their sights on the three points from the off. The Rojiblancos were like a hurricane on the counter-attack, going 0-3 up within the first half-hour.

The first goal was the result of some fine individual play by Berenguer in the fourth minute. Left-back Yuri Berchiche and Williams connected before finding Berenguer, who finished past Conan Ledesma after a tricky run in a crowded box.

It seemed as though Marcelino had banned backward passes. Captain Iker Muniain was at his unplayable best, winning a free-kick on the edge of the box which centre-midfielder Unai López launched into the top-right corner of the net. Barely 15 minutes had passed and Athletic were 0-2 up.

Athletic were enjoying themselves and the third goal came at the half-hour mark after a moment of magic between Muniain and Berenguer. The Captain bypassed the Cádiz defence with a chipped pass over the top, Berenguer collected it and dinked the ball over Ledesma from close range for his second of the match.

The winger went close to getting a hat-trick, striking over the crossbar when the ball landed at his feet from a corner.

The Lions had chances to score a fourth before the break, with Williams and Mikel Vesga threatening the Cádiz goal.

Cádiz’s manager Álvaro Cervera made no less than four changes at half-time, but Athletic were relentless and unforgiving.

Seven minutes after the restart, Williams was played into space by Unai Nuñez and the Panther powered towards goal before drilling the ball past Ledesma to make it 0-4.

Muniain could have scored a well-deserved goal but defender Alcalá was alert enough to block his attempt after a goalmouth scramble in the 66th minute.

To round things off, Athletic kept a first clean sheet under Marcelino thanks to a fine Unai Simón save from Saponjic late on and Ibai Gómez got his first minutes of the season.
