Muniain rescues deserved point at the Reale Arena

A stoppage time free-kick by the captain secures a hard-earned point against la Real

Athletic Club silenced Anoeta in stoppage time. When the entire Reale Arena thought they were going to celebrate a win, Iker Muniain stepped up to make it 1-1 and ensure Athletic did not go home empty-handed.

The captain won a free kick on the edge of the area and made the most of it with a shot that surprised Alex Remiro. Only five minutes earlier, the Lions had gone down to ten men after Iñigo Martínez received a second yellow card, the first leading to a penalty that Alexander Isak converted.

Athletic’s first chance came early on via Iñaki Williams, the striker rounding Remiro and just as he was about to push the ball into the net, Aritz Elustondo stopped him with a challenge. Some said it should have been a penalty.

A couple of Isak efforts aside, la Real hardly troubled Unai Simón. The first half was one of few chances, with Athletic having the better chances at goal.

Marcelino’s team went up a gear after the interval. In the 48th minute, Raúl García forced Remiro into a diving save with a header from Muniain’s cross.

Real Sociedad took the lead in the 57th minute. With centre-back Yeray picking himself up after a knock, Imanol Alguacil’s side put a ball into the box and the referee gave them a penalty after Mikel Merino went down under an Iñigo Martínez challenge.

Athletic hunted an equaliser. Alex Berenguer almost went in at the back post after getting on the end of a Iñaki Williams‘ whipped cross from the left.

With ten minutes left, Alex Petxarroman was subbed on to make his Athletic debut at his old home. Moments later, Martínez was shown a second yellow for an action that was not yellow in the first half when Adnan Januzaj elbowed Yeray.

La Real were caught napping as they looked to hold on to their lead. Remiro did not deal with Muniain’s free-kick and the more than half a thousand Athletic fans inside the Reale Arena celebrated in style.
