Villalibre rescues a point at San Mames

The Buffalo's stoppage-time equaliser and Iñaki's 100th Athletic goal saw Athletic salvage a point after going 0-2 down

San Mamés showed why it's a fortress as Athletic Club's Asier Villalibre struck late, taking advantage of a Sergio Herrera mistake to make sure Los Leones drew 2-2 with CA Osasuna in Saturday night's Basque derby at The Cathedral.

It was a fitting tribute to Raúl García on the night San Mames paid tribut to his career that his great friend Villalibre scored the star goal of the night.

The result is a setback in the fight for a Champions League place, but at least our home record remains intact, with Athletic's only loss at San Mames this season coming in the opening game against Real Madrid.

Ernesto Valverde's side, led by assistant coach Jon Aspiazu due to the gaffer's suspension, lacked the luck to round off Raúl's homage.

Before kick-off both teams, the first and last of his career, lined up in a guard of honour for the forward, who was accompanied by his children and former teammates Carlos Gurpegui and Patxi Puñal.

Athletic had two goals disallowed for offside in the first half, one for Iñaki Williams and another for Iker Muniain. The latter had sent San Mamés into pandemonium, a sign of things to come during Muniain's tribute on Monday.

In the 40th minute, just two minutes after Iker's disallowed effort, Osasuna's Raúl García made it 0-1 when Johan Mojica's shot took a deflection off the Rojillo striker.

The game was played at a frightening pace. Los Leones pushed forward through the superb Nico Williams, but Osasuna were also getting making inroads up top.

Just after the break, Jesus Areso found Rubén García with a long ball for the forward to suprise Athletic's defence and make it 0-2. However, the Zurigorri didn't give up and a recovery by Ander Herrera led to Iñaki Williams scoring his 100th goal as a Lion with a thunderous shot into the top corner.

With Raúl García on the pitch, who almost scored as soon as he came on with a left-footed volley, Athletic did not pose much danger until the 90th minute, when a huge left-wing cross from Iñaki Williams found Villalibre at the far post.

In an act of faith, the Buffalo pounced on the keeper's mistake to make it 2-2, and he even had a chance to find a winner minute's later.

It wasn't a great match, but there was a huge commitment to fight right until the end and hold on to fifth place.
