Athletic Club - Granada CF

Athletic Club Women have picked up their first win of the season in their first Liga F 2023/24 outing at Lezama. After two matches without a point, the Zurigorri got their first points on the board with a slender win over Granada CF.

Although Athletic dominated from start to finish, forward Ane Azkona scored the only goal of the match. It was the first official home game for new head coach David Aznar while goalkeeper Adriana Nanclares and striker Nahikari García made proper debuts.

Before kick-off, the Lezama crowd paid tribute to our European Under-19 champions Maite Zubieta, Sara Ortega and Jone Amezaga.

In the 16th minute, Azkona made the most of an Elexpuru cross to score her first goal of the season. Athletic could have gone into the break with a bigger lead had Nevado hit the target with an effort inside the box. The Lionesses dominated and were rarely troubled by the visitors.

After the break, Amezaga and Sanadri could have increased the lead. Nahikari, a newcomer to Lezama, had a double chance in the 61st minute and went close again moments later. Athletic had opportunities to kill off the match, but instead were forced to dig deep until the final whistle.

In the end, the Lionesses held on to their lead with ease and took home a first win of the campaign in front of the fans at Lezama. Next Monday, they go again as they take on Sporting de Huelva at home.
