Athletic Women lose in Granada
The Lionesses fall to a 2-0 defeat in a drab game in Andalusia
Athletic Club Women were beaten 2-0 by Granada in their Liga F match on Saturday afternoon. The Lionesses conceded early on and after giving away a penalty were unable to turn the match around.
Isa Álvarez's goal in the eighth minute came as a shock. The centre-back struck from distance, taking advantage of Quiñones' advanced position to catch her off guard.
Athletic recovered quickly and had a good chance through Jone Amezaga, but the home keeper denied her at close range.
The Lionesses had more chances to equalise. Landaluze from a corner and Nahikari after being set up by Amezaga, while at the other end Ornella almost doubled Granada's lead just before the break.
Las Rojiblancas dominated after the restart and kept creeping closer towards Granada's goal. However, in the 60th minute, the referee called a dubious penalty against Athletic. Naima converted from the spot.
Athletic threw everything at Granada as they looked to get back into the game, but had no luck in front of goal.
The Lioneses will have to quickly switch their focus to Wednesday Copa quarter-final clash against UD Tenerife at Lezama. The match will kick-off at 18:30 CET.
