Athletic Women move into Copa round of 16

The Zurigorris beat Granada CF 1-4, with goals from Nahikari, Pinedo, Amezaga and Elexpuru

Athletic Club Women are through to the last 16 of the Copa de la Reina thanks to an emphatic 1-4 win over Granada at Los Carmenes. Nahikari García scored in the first half, while Jone Amezaga, Clara Pinedo and Ane Elexpuru netted in the second to lead the Lionesses to a first away win of the season.

Athletic started off well, Nahikari getting on the end of a precise cross from Elexpuru to open the scoring in the 10th minute.

David Aznar's side had several more chances to extend their lead before the break as they kept possession well and combined nicely.

Las Rojiblancas struggled after the restart and Naima equalised for Granada with a lob in the 51st minute. Esther Martin-Pozuelo even had a chance to make 2-1, but Mariasun Quiñones pulled out a great save to deny her.

Shortly afterwards, Sara Ortega could have scored after a great team move, but it was Pinedo who put Athletic ahead again with a superb strike in the 64th minute. Granada did not give up and went for the equaliser. However, The Lioness were fully settled now and soon made it 1-3.

Elexpuru stole the ball in the opposition half and passed to Ane Azkona, who assisted Amezaga for the goal. Moments later, Elexpuru got her first senior goal with a low drive to put the game to bed.

It was a night in which Athletic demonstrated their firepower. In even more good news, Bibiane Schulze got her first minutes of the season after overcoming a long injury.

The match is a big boost for the Lionesses ahead of Sunday's clash against Madrid CFF, who are currently third in the Liga F.
