This past Friday former player of Athletic Club, Marcelino Fernandez Tabernero, passed away.

Drafted from the Barakaldo, the team from the town that saw his birth on 30 November 1920, and who belonged to the red-and white discipline during the 1946-47 and 1947-48 seasons.

He made his debut on 22 September 1946, during the first match of the 1946-47 season, being unquestionable first squad player until an inopportune knee injury separated him from the fields.

Once recovered from that injury he disputed all the matches remaining that season, league as well as Cup, match in which they reached the semi-finals. In the course of that 1946-47 season, he was also a contributor of the success achieved by Athletic in the Teresa Herrera trophy.

In his second season in Athletic Club he did not enjoy many minutes. He began as a regular first team player, but the change of Urquizu by Bagge to the front of the first team, relegated him to the bench. Once the season ended he left Athletic, having disputed 34 official matches, 28 league and 6 Cup.

Rest in Peace.
