Isidoro Urra, Athletic Club player from the 1935-36 season to the 1945-46 season, passed away…

Isidoro Urra, Athletic Club player from the 1935-36 season to the 1945-46 season, passed away on Sunday, 19 February 2006 in Santurtzi at the age of 89. His funeral will be held at the San Jorge Parish (Santurtzi) on Monday, 20 February at 19:00 hours. Athletic Club would like to offer their most heartfelt sympathies to his family.

Urra started his football career by playing for Santurtzi, a team which was part of the federation in the year 1932, and as a result of his achievements at Santurtzi he became an Athletic Club player in the 1934. His official debut came about, however, much later i.e. on 19 March 1936, during a league match that was played against Hércules at San Mamés and which was won by the Red/Whites by 5 goals to 3. The 1935-36 Championship League title was the first for Urra whilst at the Club.

Isidoro Urra was to become a heavyweight at Athletic Club after the civil war. The conflict having torn the team apart, Urra, who was only 23 at the time, was a veteran alongside Gorostiza, Oceja, Unamuno and Garate, to whom the young lions who had recently joined the club looked up to.

The post-war transition period finally came to an end in the 1940’s. In contrast, Athletic Club were triumphant during this decade: having won 1 League (1942-43) and 3 Copa (1943, 1944 and 1945), Championships and Urra played a big part in obtaining each of these titles.

After 96 League and 21 Copa matches played by the end of the 1945-46 season, he decided to move on. The latter part of his football career were spent in Donostia, as one of Real Sociedad’s leading players and Real were promoted to the First Division on two occasions during his time at the club.
