Sabino Padilla (Medical Services) and Iñigo Mujika (I+D) are participating in an investigative team that have just published a study on the effects of the application of autologous platelet-rich matrices during Achilles tendon surgery.

Sanchez M, Anitua E, Azofra J, Andia I, Padilla S, Mujika I. Comparison of surgically repaired Achilles tendon tears using platelet-rich fibrin matrices. Amer. Journal of Sports Med. 2007 Feb; 35(2):245-51 is the title of the article, entirely in English, which compares the results of six athletes that underwent surgery using this technique and another six athletes that underwent conventional surgery.
The authors of the study have reached the conclusion that the application of the preparation rich in autologous growth factors accelerate functional recovery by 30% and eliminates post-surgery complications.

This article is added to another that was published in 2003 by the cited investigators (Sánchez M, Azofra J, Anitua E, Andia I, Padilla S, Santisteban J, Mujika I. ‘Plasma rich in growth factors to treat an articular cartilage avulsion: a case report’. Med Sci Sports Exerc. 2003 Oct; 35 (10):1648-52), in which they showed the advantages of this technique in relation to an acceleration of the regeneration of the articular cartilage of the knee.
