The AC Milan expedition will arrive in Bilbao on Friday on a charter flight that will depart from the Lombard capital at 11:00 hours and which is expected to arrive at 12:40. Athletic Club faced Gianni Rivera’s AC Milan in the Round of 16 of the 1976/77 UEFA Cup. In the first leg in San Mamés, the rojiblancos, then managed by Koldo Agirre, won by 4-1 with goals 2 goals each by Carlos and Dani, and by Fabio Capello. In the second leg in San Siro, the ‘rossoneri’ were winning by 3-0 but a penalty on Rojo I, later converted by Madariaga in the minute 88, qualified Athletic Club.
Players from the AC Milan have won the Golden Ball Award on seven occasions. The first was won by Gianni Rivera in 1969; later it was Ruud Gullit in 1987 when he played for PSV Eindhoven and Milan itself. Subsequently, Marco Van Basten won it on three occasions: 1988, 1989 and 1992. The Liberian George Weah won the prestigious trophy in 1995 (played for PSG and Milan) and Andriy Shevchenko has been, until now, the latest to win it in 2004. Will Kaká be the next to win it?
AC Milan is the team that holds the most European championship titles. In total they have obtained 14: 7 European Cups (the last this past May against Liverpool) 2 Cup Winners’ Cup and 5 European Super Cups; in addition to ‘the tie’ with Real Madrid at three World Wide Cups (former Intercontinental Cups) a piece.
