Athletic Club, with Lehendakari Agirre

On the occasion of the 50 anniversary of the death of the first Lehendakari (president), Jose Antonio Agirre y Lekube, at the end of September 2009 an Organizing Commission was created, of which Athletic Club is also a part, to commemorate this day in history, which has organized the following events:

On Monday, 31 May, at 19:00 hours, the ‘Jose Antonio Aguirre, futbolari-lehendakari’ exhibit will be inaugurated in the Athletic Club Museum (San Mamés, Gate 26). In this small exhibition, the most significant aspects of Aguirre’s career in the first Athletic team are emphasized: his amateur character, his most outstanding achievements, the reasons behind his nickname and, once outside of Athletic Club, the influence that football had in his political facet and, more concretely, in the organization of the Basque National in 1937.

Also, on Wednesday, 2 June, at 19:00 hours, at Ibaigane’s event hall, Alberto Lopez Echevarrieta will give a conference ‘Jose Antonio Aguirre, a footballer with history’. In this conference the renowned Bilbaoan journalist will review the trajectory of Agirre the soccer player sprinkled of anecdotes and facts of the Bilbao of the 1920s.

Invitation will be required in order to attend both events.
