On the occasion of 8th March, Working Women’s Day, the Club wanted to bring together in a single video women representing this familly called Athletic in their respective fields – as members, as footballers, as techniques and as employees. Firstly, to join the demand for gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls, and secondly, in recognition of the added obstacles and prejudices they have had to overcome to decide their future without gender limits, freely and equally.

Eight of the eleven protagonists of the video are employees of the Club, and the other three – belonging to different generations of the same family – represent our supporters. It is proud to see that women are increasingly present and playing a more prominent role in any sphere of Athletic. The oldest in this lineup is called María Teresa Gorostiaga, and at 94, she is our fifth oldest member. Last Saturday, February 23rd, in the run-up to the derby against SD Eibar, she was the only woman in the deserved tribute that the Club paid to the members who this year are 75 years old. As Tere herself acknowledges as she watches her grandniece Uxue run after a ball in Lezama, “those were other times”.

If today Athletic Club has a first women’s team, a quarry structure with a branch in Second Division, a youth and a children’s team; if more than 40 women work in the entity, between Ibaigane, San Mamés and Lezama, some in important management positions; if each season the number of members increases until today exceeds 7,200… to a large extent it is thanks to pioneers like Tere Gorostiaga, women who paved the way and claimed their place in a world of football dominated by men.

These eleven women represent all the women of the Athletic Club, an increasingly strong team that will continue to fight, generation after generation, for equality. The values they embody are part of our identity, and that is why their shout “Athletic Gu Gara!
