Francisco Izaola, welder of San Mamés’ arch, passes away

He was one of the workers of Basconia, builder of one of the most recognised symbols of the old red-and-white stadium

Francisco Izaola Plágaro, who was one of the welders who worked on the assembly of the arch of San Mamés, died at the age of 96. Izaola, aka ‘Pantxo’, was one of the workers of the company in charge of the construction of the arch in 1953, the Basconia.

Izaola was invited by the club last May 12 to witness the last league match against Celta and was one of the few living people who took part in that architectural milestone designed by De Miguel, Magdalena and Domínguez Salazar with the engineer Fernández Casado.

The family of Athletic Club joins the pain of their relatives and wishes to convey their deepest condolences for this loss.
