Sestao River Club, rivals in the Copa

The draw for the 2019/20 Copa del Rey’s second knockout stage has paired Sestao River Club and Athletic Club. The fixture will take place at the second weekend of January on 11 or 12 next year at Las Llanas. All the knockout rounds up to the semi-finals are one-leg contests and are held in the stadium of the side who belongs to the lowest category.

The side from the Left Bank are sitting second in the Third Division Group IV, play-off place to promote to Second Division B. In the First Stage of the tournament, Sestao River Club eliminated CD Lugo in the penalty shootout.

Athletic Club and Sestao have met three times in the Copa, the last of which took place during the 1988-89 season, where the Red and Whites won 1-0 in the second leg after a goalless draw in the first leg at Las Llanas. In the other two previous qualifying stages they played together, Athletic managed to make it through too: in 1981-82 thanks to a 2-0 result after losing 1-0 in Sestao; and in 1982-83, the Lions prevailed 0-1 in the first leg, which served them well after a goalless return game at San Mamés.

This second knockout stage, prior to the round of thirty-two, will be played by 56 teams belonging to the main four national categories.
