Granada CF, rival in the semi-finals of Copa del Rey

Athletic Club will face Granada CF in the semi-finals of Copa del Rey, which will be played as a double match. The first match will be played at San Mames next week and the second match will be played at Nuevo Los Cármenes the first week of March.

The Club has taken out of the tournament different teams such as Hospitalet, Tamaraceite, Badalona and Badajoz. They have recently beaten  Valencia in the quarterfinals. At LaLiga Santander, the team led by Diego Martínez is ranked tenth with 30 points and a record of 9 wins, 3 draws and 10 defeats.

Athletic and Granada CF have faced each other in two qualifying matches throughout the history of the Copa del Rey. The result has always been favourable to the red-and-white team. Furthermore, Athletic Club won the trophy on the two occasions after facing the team from Andalusia in the tournament. The first one was in the quarterfinals of the 1943-44 season: Athletic won by 6 goals to 1 in the first round, and in the second round, the lions fell by the minimum of 1-0, so the red-and-white team made its way to the semi-finals and then they won their 16th Copa del Rey.

The last match of Copa del Rey between both teams dates back to the 1968-69 season.  On that occasion, the first round was played in Granada, with a result of a draw to one. Athletic won the second round at San Mames, 2-0. As it happens, on that occasion the two teams also met in the semi-final, which in the end became the 22nd title for Athletic.
