Zoom I Jon Morcillo’s journey

Zoom I Jon Morcillo’s journey

Jon Morcillo discusses the complicated path that lead him to his Athletic Club debut against Granada last Saturday

Jon Morcillo is the first subject of a series of reports to be released during the 2020-21 season through which Athletic Club intends to bring fans closer to what is happening in the club.

Morcillo became the latest Lezama graduate to make his Athletic Club debut when he lined up against Granada last Saturday and we wanted to see how Morci and his family felt about this extraordinary moment in the youngster’s career.

Together with his parents, Antonio and Josefina, and his sister Oihane, we take a look back at Jon’s route to the first team. It was a difficult journey and Jon’s first attempt to earn a spot in Lezama was not successful.

However, Jon did not give up. He kept fighting in the local leagues and in 2016-17 Athletic Club signed the winger from Cultural Durango. Jon was brought into the C team, Basconia, then managed by Joseba Etxeberria and started on a path which ended up with him scoring 10 goals in 29 games for Bilbao Athletic in 2019-20. This was enough for him to be given a first-team contract.

His debut in Granada -which we watched alongside his family in Bilbao- will hopefully be the first step in a long career in the elite in which Morcillo will fight to maintain his place in his boyhood club for many years to come.
