Unai Nuñez: “We’ll fight to finish as high up the table as possible”

Unai Nuñez said Athletic are desperate to get a second consecutive LaLiga victory on Saturday against Osasuna and “maintain the form of the last few games”

Unai Nuñez promised the Athletic Club squad will do everything possible to make sure they finish the season on a high note.

Athletic are unbeaten since March in LaLiga Santander and recently defeated Atlético Madrid and Sevilla FC. The Rojiblancos currently sit in ninth place in the table, six points away from seventh-placed Real Betis.

With only four matches left, chances of European qualification are slim. But Nuñez reiterated that while their is hope, the squad won’t stop going for it.

“I think we’ve performed well in the last few fixtures and we want to keep that going,” Nuñez said in a press conference at Lezama.

“We know getting into Europe is going to be difficult, but we’re going to fight until the end and try to finish as high up the table as possible.”

Athletic are without back-to-back wins all season and the centre-back admitted it’s something the team would like to put right.

He said: “The team has its sights set on getting a second consecutive win in LaLiga for the first time this season. We’re going to work as hard as we can to make it happen.”

The Lions will face CA Osasuna in Bilbao this Saturday (21:00 CEST). The Pamplona-based outfit are tenth in LaLiga Santander.

“They’ve had a great season,” Nuñez added. “Especially in this final part of the season. But we can’t look at the opposition, we have to look at ourselves.

“We have to put an end to the silly mistakes that have cost us this season and improve in every match to maintain the competitive level we are capable of.”
