Marcelino: “It’s unbelievable we didn’t win”
Marcelino says Athletic “did not deserve to lose in a game in which they were better than Real Madrid”
Athletic Club manager Marcelino García Toral bemoaned the Lions’ lack of luck in their 1-0 loss at the Santiago Bernabéu, saying “Athletic did not deserve to lose”.
It is the Lions’ first away loss of the campaign. Despite being on top for most of the match and having a succession of chances to score, Athletic were unable to find a way past Thibaut Courtois.
“It’s unbelievable we didn’t win,” Marcelino said during his post-match press conference. “It’s something we’ve gone through in several matches now. I hope the trend changes soon.
“We need a bit more luck. Creating so many chances and giving so few away against a Real Madrid side in such good form… You can’t be so poorly rewarded. Football is unfair like that sometimes, but the team that scores more goals wins.”
Marcelino continued: “We have far fewer points than we deserve. We have a problem in front of goal, not because of a lack of attempts, but because of a lack of luck in the final moment. Apart from the first 20 minutes, the team dominated and put in a very good performance, as we usually do. I have said it repeatedly, we are doing well and we’re on the right track.”
The Athletic boss is not planning on making many changes off the back of this loss, saying he is committed to continuing in the same vein.
He said: “We have to keep competing as we are doing. This team is suffering, because we have the feeling that we are doing a lot of good things right, but getting so little reward for it.”
