“Efficiency has a component of luck that we don’t have at the moment”
Marcelino believes it is “very cruel” what is happening to his team, but remains confident that the dynamic will change.
Marcelino García Toral appeared at the end of the match between Athletic Club and Sevilla FC and tried to look on the bright side of the defeat: “Normally, efficiency, in many cases, has a component of luck and it’s clear that, today, we didn’t have that. That’s how it is, the ball doesn’t want to go in. It was an extraordinary game with an incredible first half. We had all kinds of chances. The rival had one and then scored a great goal into the top corner when they were quite subdued. The team kept going and I congratulated them because it’s difficult to play like this against a team like Sevilla. He shows that he wants to, that he goes and combines, that he makes an effort, plays and arrives. We have to insist. We can’t stop there. The next day we’ll try to generate the same“.
The head coach can’t find an explanation for what is happening to them: “It’s obvious that if the run of form continues, doubts will arise. Sevilla haven’t generated anything for us and that’s complicated because they have very good players. Rivals win games like today’s and we don’t win when we are superior or when the game is even. It’s the first time in LaLiga that a team has created so many goalscoring chances and then gone in with a clean sheet. It’s sad and very cruel“.
Despite the poor run of form, Marcelino remains confident that this situation will be reversed: “I’d like to see our team play like in the last few games. If we look at the data, I think this team is better now than it was in September, but before we were winning and now we’re not. This means that there is a team alive. I am convinced that this luck, which is necessary, is depriving us of a lot of points“.
