The former Athletic Club central midfielder spoke to the club before the match at El Sadar
On 5 March 2020, Mikel San José played the last of his 397 games in an Athletic Club shirt. It was in the second leg of the Copa semi-final against Granada CF at Los Cármenes, a match which saw Los Leones progress to the that year's final, which was later postponed until April 2021 due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
On 1 March 2023, having retired from football due to his physical problems, our former midfielder accompanied Athletic Club for the first leg of the semi-final against CA Osasuna. During the two-hour journey, Mikel San José spoke about his new life off the pitch and also recalled some of his favourite Copa moments in the red and white stripes.
Upon arriving in the Navarrese capital, he was greeted by the numerous Athleticzales in Pamplona for the match and he was also able to say hello to his former teammates on the pitch at El Sadar.
