Great turnout at San Mames training session ahead of Basque Derby

Some 8,000 fans came to The Cathedral to watch Valverde's side train

Around 8,000 Athletic Club fans, the vast majority of them children, attended the open-door training session held at San Mamés as preparations begin for Saturday's Basque Derby against Real Sociedad.

There was rounds of applause all round. Iñigo Lekue received the first standing ovation as he took to the pitch to do his recovery exercises with fitness coach Xabi Clemente. After an hour and a half of work, with the fans treated all kinds of goals the Lions approached the spectators to hand out Athletic products.

It was the best way to kick off a week of preparation before the game against Real Sociedad (16:15 CEST), a fixture in which the Bilbao side will go for three crucial points in their quest for European football.
