Valverde: "We played at a really high level"

The boss congratulated his side on a great victory, stating "it was important for us to win at home"

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde praised his Lions' performance level during their 2-0 win over Real Sociedad in Saturday's Basque Derby in Bilbao.

Los Rojiblancos romped to victory thanks to a brilliant team display and a brace by striker Iñaki Williams.

"We played at a really high level and we're happy with the three points. It was important for us to win at home. It was a derby and we know how tense and lively it is and what it means for both teams," the gaffer said in his post-match press conference.

"We dominated the first half, we were very good. At the start of the second half they pushed up the pitch and created some dangerous situations.

"Then we found our composure and that's how we made it 2-0. They pressed us at the end and had a few chances to score, but I think, in general, we controlled the game well."

The boss urged calm when it comes to Athletic's European hopes, reminding his players and fans there is a long way to go yet and everyone needs to be at their best.

He said: "We have to keep pushing to achieve the goals we set ourselves. I don't look at the standings too much, but of course we're in the decisive phase now. Every game is extremely important and winning matches is essential."
