Unlucky defeat against Sevilla FC

Athletic Club's unbeaten run comes to an end in a match where they had two first-half goals disallowed and the visitors scored a stoppage-time penalty

Athletic Club's three-match winning streak has come to an end with an unexpected defeat against Sevilla FC, who took victory with an opinion-splitting penalty after Yeray slipped and brought down Lucas Ocampos in the box in the 90th minute. Ocampos himself converted from the spot.

The Lions had two goals disallowed for offside in the first half. VAR calling Nico Williams narrowly offside in the opening stages and ruling out a Gorka Guruzeta for the same reason. Athletic were left stunned by the final blow, which also brings Sevilla closer to the fight for seventh place.

It all began with protests about the late kick-off time, which kept at least 6,000 spectators away from San Mamés in what was a vital fixture for Los Rojiblancos' European ambitions.

Nonetheless, Athletic came firing out of the blocks, Oscar de Marcos making inroads down the right flank. The first disallowed goal came in the seventh minute, Ander Herrera playing in De Marcos, who cut it back for Nico to tap in. But VAR chalked it off.

It would not be the only ill-fated moment for Athletic. Nine minutes later, a well-worked corner between Nico and Oihan Sancet ended with Guruzeta heading in the former's cross. As San Mames erupted in jubilation, VAR delivered the bad news that another offside had been called.

Athletic continued to play their game, although it became increasingly difficult to break through the Sevillian defence. Yuri Berchiche found Guruzeta at the near post with a great service before half-time, but the striker couldn't quite connect.

The half-time break saw San Mames pay tribute to the first ever Athletic Club Women side to win a league title on the 20th anniversary of the feat, the players and coaching staff from the squad receiving a standing ovation as they took to the pitch.

The Andalusians were looking to pounce on a mistake and almost found one via Dani Vivian, who lost possession but made up for it with a great run back to deny Bryan Gil with a diving block.

Just as the match seemed destined for a draw, Los Leones were on the receiving end of more bad luck. Even though Yeray seemed to get a touch on the ball first, the referee showed no hesitation in point to the penalty spot and Ocampos scored.

A setback in the fight for Europe, but there's still time time to bounce back, starting in Mallorca on Monday.
