The Tree of Gernika friendly tournament between Athletic and Chivas, the only two elite football clubs who solely field homegrown players, was set up to demonstrate that individuality and heritage still play an important role in the sport - and it did just that.
Chivas took home the symbolic trophy after levelling the series with a 2-0 victory before winning 4-2 in the deciding penalty shootout.
There was a festive atmosphere at the Estadio Akron as Chivas celebrated the culture and identity of their region and its deep roots with the Basque Country.
