Valverde & Vivian: “We're only focusing on Fenerbahçe”
This is what Ernesto Valverde and Dani Vivian said at their pre-match press conference before Athletic Club vs Fenerbahce SK
Ernesto Valverde reiterated his one-match-at-a-time mantra as Athletic Club get ready for the toughest of European away days against Turkish giants Fenerbahçe SK.
The Lions will face Jose Mourinho's side at the Şükrü Saracoğlu stadium on Wednesday afternoon (16:30 CET, 18:30 TRT), with both sides looking to consolidate their Europa League progression.
"Victories give us confidence, but the most difficult thing now is to keep winning," Valverde said at his pre-match press conference in Türkiye.
"We're up against an opponent that also has a lot at stake. We're not thinking about what we've done before, we're just concentrating on Fenerbahçe.
"Fenerbahçe are a team made to compete in the Champions League. They have the competitive spirit that characterises Mourinho, a world-class coach. From the midfield forward they are especially dangerous."
"That people see us as a strong opponent is motivating"
Dani Vivian admitted he is relishing the Zurigorri's European form and the status that comes with it, but stressed Athletic must back that up with more big performances.
He said: "The fact people see us as a strong opponent is always motivating. However, to win something you have to go through many steps and tomorrow is the next one."
The centre-back said the team spirit that exists among the changing room has played a key role in the Lions' recent good form.
"Nobody sees themselves as starter or a substitute, we all feel like important players," he added.
"Proof of this is that we're maintaining our good results while rotating. We're a brave, intense team that likes to attack. Tomorrow we'll try to maintain this identity."
