Athletic Club Women lose to UDG Tenerife at Lezama

Las Leonas dominated the second half but couldn't convert that into goals

Athletic Club Women fell to a 0-1 home defeat against UDG Tenerife on Saturday morning. The two sides were equal on points before the clash played out a hard-fought encounter at Lezama.

While Athletic dominated throughout, having plenty of chances to score, especially in the second half, Tenerife took the lead in the 23rd minute and held out for the rest of the match.

Athletic started well and within minutes Clara Pinedo had an excellent chance. Sara Ortega got to the byline and put a ball into the middle of the box where Pinedo's shot was stopped by an in-form Noelia Ramos.

The Lionesses were dangerous in attack and made life difficult for the Canary Islanders, but the visitors struck against the run of play via Blom in the 23rd minute. After the goal, Tenerife side grew in confidence, settling down and controlling the game. Quiñones denied Koko a goal in a one-on-one situation and Claire Falknor had two more attempts before the end of the first half.

Athletic came out firing after the break, Jone Amezaga having an effort stopped by Ramos this time. Athletic moved the ball around well, but failed to create any clear goal-scoring chances. Peke's left-footed shot in the 80th minute the Lionesses only moment of hope.

Athletic hurried and rushed but mistakes seeped in. Tenerife capitalised on that and wound down the clock to take home all three points.

After the final-whistle, there was a simple tribute to match official Marta Frías Acedo, who was refereeing her final match before retirement.
