The Michelin Man

During these days a movable ‘Michelin’ man, dressed with the rojiblanco kit, has been placed at the entrance to Ibaigane, to support Athletic in view of the Final on 13 May.

This same doll was ordered and brought from Madrid in 1958 by the ‘Aguinaga Dealership’ in Deusto to coax Athletic along on the eve of the Copa Final which that year was played in the Bernabéu against the powerful Real Madrid of Di Stefano, Rial, Kopa or Gento.

On that occasion the ‘eleven villagers’ were able to deal with Liga and Europe Champion Real Madrid, whom they defeated at their home by a resounding Real Madrid 0 – Athletic Club 2.

Thanks to the cession of this icon, that so many fans and Bilbaoans are likely to recognize, to the Athletic Club Museum by Antón Navarro, Athletic recovers that endearing gesture of support to the team. Now, we just need to repeat the result.

This icon that so many tomateros (Athletic fans) and Bilbaoans will surely recognize has been ceded to the Athletic Club Museum collection by Antón Navarro.
