The Athletic Club Women’s team defeated FC Barcelona, in the penalty shoot-out, in the final of the Final of the VIII Getxo International Tournament of Women’s Football disputed in Fadura. Regulation time ended in a 1-1 draw; and in the penalty shoot-out Guarrotxena blocked a shot by Selena which allowed Athletic Club to take this international tournament.
It was an entertaining first half, but with few goal occasions. The clearest was for the Catalans when Marta penetrated down the right and her cross into the area was deflected by Irene with her head. Nekane and Eunate had the best occasions for the rojiblancas, but with little success before Chelsi.
After the rest, FC Barcelona went ahead in the first minutes thanks to a crossed shot by Willy about which Guarrotxena could do nothing. The rojiblanca’s reaction came in the form of a cross from the right and I. Murua headed the ball in outside of Rafols reach.
Barcelona could have gone ahead in the match in the minute 68, when the referee called a penalty in favour of the Catalans, but Mélani’s shot to Guarrotxena’s goal went wide.
In the penalty shootout, Garazi, Arranz, Orueta, Eunate and Izaskun scored for the rojiblancas; and for the azulgranas: Gema, Romero and Miriam scored; whereas Selena failed to score the third.
In the previous match, the Portuguese team Albergaria defeated Bizkerre by 8-0.
