The new stadium lived against Real Madrid a spectacular day, with the presence of 49,095 people. This figure represents a new record of attendance, surpassing the 48,439 spectators that gathered in the match against the same team in the season 2014-2015.
In August 2014 started the current field with all its perimeter built and did so in the historic inaugural match against Naples with 47,100 spectators.
Since then the attendance at San Mamés has maintained a stable dynamic. The first season, 2014-2015, even without the full capacity available, lived an average of 82% adding the League, Champions and Cup matches, and Europa League match against Torino.
From last year, 2015-2016, with the 53,000 seats available, attendance remained at 79% in the League. This figure drops to 75% if the continental route is included, from the ,atches against Inter Baku to the quarterfinals against Sevilla, plus the Super Cup against FC Barcelona and the Cup matches against Linense, Villarreal and again Barcelona.
During this season, 2016-2017, the average attendance to San Mamés in the 15 games of Liga disputed so far, stands at 79%. Slightly more than 75% if they include all four UEFA Europa League games and Cup matches against Racing and Barcelona.
This trend indicates that the occupancy rate of the Cathedral is stabilized above three quarters of the entrance, improving the attendance figures of the last years in old San Mamés.
For example, in the 2012-13 season, from the 29,196 spectators of the first match with Betis until the farewell with the 32,100 assistants in the friendly with the selection of Bizkaia, the average attendance to the field was of 71%.
The 2011-12 season, marked by the extensive tour in UEFA and Cup, the average occupation was 68%. A season in which the field got near the full ocupancy against rivals like the Manchester, Schalke, Sporting of Portugal and Mirandés.
To find percentages of attendance similar to the current ones, one has to travel ten years back in time. The 2006-07 season opened with 35,138 spectators against Real Sociedad and closed with 37,096 against Levante, in an historical appointment that assured the permanence. A season in which San Mamés had an occupation of 78%.
Finally, note that the 49,095 spectators against Real Madrid have not established the only record of attendance lived in San Mamés this season. Last October, 9,127 people gathered at the Cathedral in the match that Athletic Club played against the Danish women of Fortuna Hjorring, the best entry in a tie of Round of 32 in the 16 editions that have been held so far in The Women’s Champions League.
