Bilbao City Council and the Athletic Club join forces in an initiative in favour of promoting the use of Euskera (Basque). The aim is to promote the use of our language also in sport and in leisure time. Specifically, the action planned for today, Saturday 23rd February, is to encourage citizens to always use the first word in Basque.

To this purpose, some 30,000 leaflets will be distributed at the access gates to San Mamés among the people attending the match, a task that will be carried out by 52 people when the fans access the pitch. Also, on the Cathedral scoreboards you will be able to see the motto with the images from the flyer that will be handed out at the entrance. The SD Eibar has also collaborated in the initiative and has agreed to the use of its shield together with the animations.

“San Mamesen ere… lehenengo berba euskaraz” is a pamphlet in a relaxed tone that aims to give confidence to sportsmen and citizens in general so that they decide to speak in Euskera also in leisure areas.

This is the third action by Bilbao City Council of the initiative “Hirian ere… lehenengo berba euskaraz…”. It started in 2017 in Santo Tomás, the next one was organised on the occasion of the Bilbao-Bilbao Cycling Tourist March which celebrated its 30th anniversary last year, and now in San Mamés.
