From the Museum to the Main Box: Real Sociedad

The Athletic Museum exhibits two objects that recall the rivalry with the white-and-blue in San Mamés.

The Athletic Club receives Real Sociedad in the third matchday of La Liga Santander, a confrontation full of tradition and history. Not in vain, we have faced the team from Gipuzkoa in 262 occasions, 175 in official matches (between Regional Championship, Cup, League, Basque League and League Cup), and 87 in friendly matches. This gives rise to recall some of the historical episodes that have marked the rivalry between the two clubs through the exhibition of two objects from the collection of the Athletic Museum, which will be displayed on the day of the match in a window located in the San Mames’ Main Box.

One of them is the trophy of the Marquesa de Casa Mena, delivered by Queen Victoria Eugenia in August 1922, after the double red-and-white victory over the Real Sociedad (3-1 and 4-3) on the occasion of the inauguration of El Malecón, the pitch of the Sociedad Gimnástica de Torrelavega. These two matches were the first to be directed by Fred Pentland at the head of Athletic Club.

The other object is a shield of the San Sebastian club carved in wood and framed that was delivered by the entity white-and-blue to the club in September 1969 during the Ciudad de San Sebastian Trophy, friendly tournament organised by the Real between 1966 and 1970, and that Athletic Club won on one occasion.
