San José completes 10 years in the first team

The versatile footballer from Navarre reaches the symbolic mark of a decade since he made his debut against Austria Vienna.

Iker Muniain and Óscar de Marcos have recently been the players of the squad of our club who celebrated the anniversary of their debut in official encounter with the first team. Today, 17th September 2019, it is Mikel San José’s turn. Like his two team-mates, the red-and-white footballer also made its debut in European competition, specifically in the first day of the Group Stage of the Europa League against Austria Vienna in San Mamés, coming from a bench directed then by Joaquín Caparrós.

After training with Athletic Club youth teams and reaching the junior stage, San José was signed by Liverpool FC before returning home in the summer of 2009. Over the course of these ten years, he has accumulated 386 official matches between the League, Cup, Spanish Supercup, Champions League and Europa League, and has been able to score 37 goals in those five competitions. Just one of those goals will remain forever in all zurigorri minds, the one against FC Barcelona in the first leg of the 2015/16 Supercup from the centre of the San Mamés field, which served to open the historic 4-0 win that ended with the achievement of that title.
