From the Museum to the Box: RCD Espanyol

Athletic Club Museum will present, at the Box devoted to Authorities, a sculpture that the Catalan entity gave to Athletic Club for its golden anniversary.

Since the first face-to-face clash in 1902, Athletic Club and RCD Espanyol have played more than 200 matches, friendly and official clashes, many of them became historic. Some of them to be highlighted: the first official match in our history in 1902, the first LaLiga match played in Bilbao in 1929, or the first defeat suffered in the same championship in the current San Mamés in 2014.

The item to be shown does not correspond, however, to any particular clash. It is indeed a gift the Catalan entity brought to Athletic Club, in 1948, June 13rd, because of Athletic Club golden anniversary.

That day, during the break of a match called “Torneo de los Históricos” where Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Athletic Club took part, Athletic did receive many gifts and acknowledgement from different clubs and institution due to his fiftieth anniversary.

The one given by RCD Espanyol is the one that can be shown at the Box: a sculpture that represents Sant Jordi, patron saint of Catalunya since 1456, lancing to the dragon.
