Minimal defeat at Tenerife

Athletic Women’s team fall to Granadilla defeat, with a penalty conceded just before half-time

Tenerife remains being unfavourable territory for Athletic Women’s team, who came out with empty hands from their fifth visit to UDG Granadilla, after the locals scored a penalty just before the break. The red-and-white side had to adapt themselves to the particular characteristics of the playing field, made of artificial turf and with reduced dimensions, conditions which Villacampa had specially been emphasizing all week long. From minute one, it was clear that the game was not going to be easy.

In the 5th minute, Athletic’s first approach to the area took place, a free-kick taken by Garazi and headed by Damaris that went straight to keeper Reis’ hands. However, it was the hosts who controlled the first half, with Estrella and Allegra as their main attackers. By the 15th minute, Sierra and Valdezate had already been booked, a sign of the difficulties they were facing to stop their rivals.

On 21 minutes, Allegra, with a cross shot, forced De la Nava to intervene with a fine clearing save. Soon afterwards, Martín Prieto, who had received a cross by Lucía, fired a ball that ended up hitting the post. On 35 minutes, the most controversial play of the game took place; a shot on target from Leia, assisted by Lucía. Reis touched a ball which bounced inside the line, but the referee denied the Red and Whites the goal. What could have been a 0-1 win turned into a 1-0 defeat, when a penalty foul by Eunate over Martín Prieto was scored by Allegra on 40 minutes.

Athletic were better positioned on the pitch at the beginning of the second half. Villacampa made a move in order to get the leveller, and brought on Marta Unzué and Ane Azkona for Valdezate and Yulema. But the contest was equally contested and there were barely any chances. The few times the Red and Whites got near the goal, they lacked accuracy. The pressure did not bring any goals. The Red and Whites’ three-victory streak has therefore come to an end in Primera Iberdrola.
