V. Gimbert: “It was strange for me to watch the match from home”

Muscular problems prevented the veteran defender from playing in Granadilla, thus breaking a streak of 88 consecutive matches on play

Vanesa Gimbert missed her first match of the season last week -8th matchday of the Primera Iberdrola- against UD Granadilla. The defender has been suffering discomfort in the insertion of the hamstring for some time and could not travel with the expedition to the Canary Islands. A streak of 88 consecutive matches of play was thus broken. Gimbert admits that she was surprised not to be with the team at the weekend: “It is strange to watch your team’s match from home. It is hard and they did not televise it. We made a group of messages to follow it. It was weird and kind of agonizing.”

The figures of the player from Bergara are spectacular. In the last seasons she has played practically everything. Since joining the club in 2013, Vanessa has been a regular in the starting line-ups. The year of her arrival she played all the games; the following two seasons she only missed two games due to the accumulation of cards. In the 2016/2017 season she played 26 matches, her year with fewer minutes. In the next two years, 2017-2018 and 2018-2019, she played all league minutes. This year, with the arrival of Villacampa, she had played all the minutes except in the first day, when she was substituted in the second half against UD Levante.

Just four games away from reaching the figure of 200 as a player of Athletic Club, the defense, which will reach the age of 40 next April, says it tries to take care to the maximum to continue performing in the elite. “It is true that because of the discomfort I bear I do not do some exercises that harm me. I go through the physiotherapists every day and I try to get the best possible to each training for Sunday to be full.”
