The lionesses keep pushing forward

After the thrashing in Vallecas, Athletic Club prevails over EDF Logroño (3-0) at Lezama, getting into the top positions of the table

Athletic Club Women’s team keep taking steps forwards, making steady progress after a hesitant start to the season in the Primera Iberdrola. Ángel Villacampa’s side, who defeated Rayo 1-4  in their grounds last week, prevailed over EDF Logroño with a resounding three-nil win. The red-and-white victory allows Athletic Women to sit in the top-flight standings ahead of their visit to Atlético de Madrid next week.

After an initial scare, solved by a great save from Andrea de la Nava -who was playing against her ex team,- Athletic got a grip of the game and created danger with Erika’s, Lucía García’s and Ane Azkona’s constant attacking moves, which were a real headache for the hosts. On 27 minutes, the player form Navarra stole the ball in their opponents’ box, assisting Lucía García, who scored and gave the lionesses the lead.

The goal bolstered Villacampa’s side confidence, who were starting to feel comfortable on the pitch no. 2 of Lezama. Erika Vázquez, who was back into the starting XI, found in Azkona a good partner in the forward line. They executed a wall pass before Danish goalkeeper Johansen stopped a point-blank low strike from Erika. Vanesa Gimbert was about to score a second goal, but it was Azkona, on 42 minutes, who headed the fine cross sent by Oihane Hernández from the right flank into goal.

As it happened in Vallecas last week, Athletic were eager for more after the break. A cross from Azkona from the right made captain Erika face Johansen again. The keeper prevented the goal with her feet but could not do anything to stop midfielder Marta Unzué’s shot, who was quick to finish off the play in the 54th minute, scoring the third red-and-white goal. From then until the end of the game, Athletic basically made substitutions -Villacampa gave Azkona, Unzue, Lucía, and Erika some time to rest, while the visitors played the last fifteen minutes with ten players due to Dorine’s dismissal- and enjoyed a win that boosts the team’s morale before their big match against Atlético next Sunday (12.00pm) in Madrid.
