“We were able to reinvent ourselves”

Ángel Villacampa wants to improve the team’s performance in the second half of the season, which will start off tomorrow with the match against UD Levante (Lezama, 12.00pm)

Ángel Villacampa has appeared before the press ahead of the sixteenth matchweek in the Primera Iberdrola, where Athletic Club and UD Levante will play each other tomorrow, Sunday (12.00pm), at Lezama. It will be a clash between two high-level opponents, a female national football classic. The red-and-white coach knows that the match against FC Barcelona must be left behind and he wants his players to claim a win against the side that is currently sitting third in the table.

“Levante have a great squad and a considerable budget, but we are playing at home and we must take a small step forward to climb into the places we want to be in. Not getting the expected result would move us away from that goal; if we get our identity back, something that we have been working on, we will be able to compete for the top positions again. I don’t think tomorrow’s match will have anything to do with the away game (a 2-0 loss). We’ve succeeded in reinventing ourselves and the players have brought out the best in them,” said Athletic Club’s manager.

At the close of the first half of the season, our women’s first team are sitting fifth in the table, with 23 points. Villacampa thinks that “at the beginning, we were far from the aim we had set ourselves, but little by little the team have improved their results and procedures. In the second half of the season, we would like to have better numbers, a better performance and a better image. We must also give people a reason to come to Lezama as well. That’s one of the objectives established this year. We want people to value us for all the things we do.”

The red-and-white manager has given the names of the 18 players who make up this week’s match squad: Andrea Sierra, Andrea de la Nava, Andere Leguina, Ainhoa Moraza, Garazi Murua, Damaris Egurrola, Nekane Díez, María Díaz, Yulema Corres, Maite Oroz, Eunate Arraiza, Erika Vázquez, Lucía García, Leia Zarate, Vanesa Gimbert, Ane Azkona, Oihane Hernández and Oihane Valdezate.
