A bad start dooms the Lionesses

A bad start dooms the Lionesses

Athletic Club fell 4-1 to Madrid CFF at Matapiñonera, conceding three goals in the first 20 minutes

Athletic Club had already confronted a complicated situation before the ball started to roll at Matapiñonera. The players who had been sidelined with the flu, their opponent’s urgent need and Geyse’s strength -the forward loaned from Benfica this January- indicated the contest would be more complicated than it looked on paper.

However, the match started with a clear chance for the Red and Whites. María Díaz, after a pass from Azkona, could have opened the scoring, but her shot was cleared for corner by Poza. This beginning did not foreshadow that Madrid CFF would manage to lash the ball over the red-and-white line on three occasions before the 20-minute mark. The first goal arrived on 5 minutes: Da Costa had no mercy when he intercepted a clearance after a corner-kick. Soon afterwards, also following a corner-kick, Chikwelu scored the 2-0 with a poweful shot. A devastating blow suffered in less than ten minutes. Villacampa’s team tried to settle on their opponents’ side of the field, but Geyse, after a powerful run, came clear in front of Andere, beating her with a low shot and scoring the painful 3-0 in the 19th minute.

The three goal scorers are new winter reinforcements in the team from San Sebastián de los Reyes who, thanks to today’s victory, have avoided the trouble of the relegation zone. The team from Madrid had not won a league match since last September. Athletic reduced the goal margin before the break thanks to a goal from Lucía García on 33 minutes, who took advantage of a mistake made by Poza at the goal. The forward notched up her sixth goal this season.

In the second half, Villacampa decided to bring on Irene Oguiza. The player from Durango is the third footballer who has made her debut this season. Amaiur, who also played for the first team this campaign (and Andrea de la Nava, who did it in the first league match), also entered the pitch to try to help the ream in the second interval. Oihane Hernández gave it a go with a shot from outside the area. The red-and-white side had not much more opportunities to get near the goal o create danger in Madrid CFF’s box. Even less when, on 85 minutes, Geyse made a run one more and time performed an assist to Laura Fernández, who finished off the game scoring the 4-1.

The Lionesses were thwarted by a bad start and left Madrid empty-handed. Valencia CF, another rival in need, will visit Lezama next Sunday at 11.00 am.
