A long-awaited trophy

The Queen’s Cup is a desired trophy for Athletic. The red-and-white team have twice reached the final of the championship, in the 2011-2012 and 2013-2014 seasons, when they lost against Espanyol 2-1 in Las Rozas and against FC Barcelona in the decisive penalty shootout in Ceuta. The Cup has left many tears and emotions on the way. Precisely, in the participation in this tournament FC Barcelona has been his great rival, preventing the lionesses from winning the title or passing the round up to four times, the last one (2017-2018), in the semifinals of the tournament in Reus.

Last year, Athletic got through the first round by beating Real Betis on penalties before facing Atletico Madrid in the quarterfinals in the historic San Mamés match, which was the record attendance for a women’s match in Europe, with 48,121 spectators.
