Athletic have secured their place in the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals

The Lionesses make it through to the next round in overtime thanks to three goals scored in the last twenty minutes after a contested match against UDG Tenerife

Athletic Club have had to struggle hard to get a place in the Copa de la Reina 2020 quarter-finals. The red-and-white side prevailed over Unión Deportiva Granadilla Tenerife in overtime thanks to goals from Garazi Murua and Lucía García in a match where both teams were evenly matched.

The 90 minutes passed without many remarkable opportunities, the alternating ball possession and the lack of chances from both teams were the main protagonists. Only a couple of times did Lucía García get near the goal, while Valdezate and Azkona launched two hesitant shots in the first half. The Lionesses had a great opportunity to score after a one-on-one between Lucía and Alina Reis, but the goalkeeper cleared it in extremis. The second half followed the same script. On 93 minutes, Oihane Valdezate could have avoided overtime with an angled shot that scraped the bar.

In extra time, as Azkona entered the box through the right wing, she was fouled by Patry Gavira, who hit the player from Navarra on her face with her foot. The penalty was taken and converted by Garazi. Valdezate was about to increase the tally on 105 minutes, but it was Lucía García who decided the game in a counter-attack. Vanesa Gimbert, on 119 minutes, headed in the third after a corner-kick and took the Lionesses right to the Copa de la Reina quarter-finals, whose draw will be held next Friday.
